There’s not too much to be said about Resident Evil 4 at this point. It’s a game so widely loved and absolutely playable that it is still getting re-releases and re-masters even in 2016 on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One – some eleven years after the original GameCube version landed in 2005!

That’s not to mention the fact this one game brought about the acceptance of third-person shooting in the mainstream and meant titles like Mass Effect and Gears of War could flourish in later years.

Resident Evil 4 took survival horror, threw it into a hot frying pan, added a dash of action and a sprinkling of QTEs and served it up with gorgeous graphics. The slow zombies were gone, replaced with grumpy Spanish civilians that ranted tense phrases you couldn’t understand. The tank controls were half-gone, too, with laser sights and beefy weapons allowing for limb damage and headshot fun. Yes, there was inventory management and escort quests but this game was so focused on the action that you could put up with such minor irritations.

The enemies were terrifying whether they were chainsaw wielding madmen with sacks over their heads or grotesque deformities made from tentacles, razor sharp claws and eyeballs. Plus there were more traditional military men to defeat in the end game and a four-foot something villain with a strange voice. It’s a funny game, too. Just ask Jim Sterling.
