Nintendo Switch 2020 Wish List: 10 Things We Need To See
1. A Virtual Console Equivalent
Realistically, it’s probably inevitable that Nintendo will eventually give us an N64 emulator, and maybe even a Gamecube, too. Based on current progress, though, we're in for a long wait. The SNES selection finally dropped this year - on this form we’d have to wait until 2021 or so to play Super Mario Sunshine.
The virtual console question is one Nintendo might have to rethink. They didn’t bring it to the Switch as they didn’t feel that they could ask people to repurchase their favourite old titles a third time, which is fair enough. Drip feeding us these classic titles is more a test of patience, however, than a smart strategy. Dropping a good selection of old games would be easily achievable, relatively speaking, and an instant bump of great publicity. The Switch has found great success with a new generation of gamers - why not let them discover the magic of those 90s and early 00s titles?
Nintendo clearly have a plan and feel that a slow roll out strategy is the best thing to do, but they’ve got enough great stuff in the pipeline that they don’t need to tease out their back catalogue. There’ll be plenty of people who’ve recently acquired a Switch - let’s give them something great to play.
