Pokémon: 10 Weirdest Evolution Methods

4. Tyrogue To Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan And Hitmontop

When introduced all the way back in generation one, it was clear that Hitmonchan and Hitmonlee were linked to each other, much like later generation Pokémon Seviper and Zangoose, Sawk and Throh, and Oranguru and Passimian.

Yet at the time, no one knew this link stretched as far as evolution. This news came with generation two, and the introduction of both Hitmontop, and the pre-evolution to all three - Tyrogue.

While Tyrogue's multiple evolutionary options are not uncommon, it is the way in which they are determined that makes the baby Pokémon unique. All three evolutions are triggered by Tyrogue reaching level 20. If at that point the Pokémon's attack stat is higher than it's defence, it will evolve into Hitmonlee, and if the defence stat is the higher of the two it will evolve into Hitmonchan. Only if they are equal will Tyrogue evolve into Hitmontop.

This incorporates a somewhat random element to its evolution, based on the stats of the wild Tyrogue. The use of stat increasing vitamins such as Protein and Iron however, can help achieve the desired secondary form by raising the Pokémon's attack and defence respectively. Just think of it as a different kind of training.
