Pokémon: Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee - 10 Terrible Gen 1 Pokémon You Forgot You Hated

Hypno is one of the most frequently forgotten Gen 1 Pokemon, and that’s probably for the best. He’s terribly, woefully incomplete.

Not necessarily from an appearance perspective, mind you. While he looks fairly silly with his crayon yellow body, strange face and signature pendulum, his design isn’t necessarily bad. The Pokemon just doesn’t actually execute its core idea.

Hypno is meant to be based after a Baku, an Asian mythological creature that is said to devour dreams. While it obviously influenced the design of Hypno’s basic form, Drowzee, most of the features that make it resemble the beast are stripped away as it inexplicably takes a more humanoid form.

That stinks, but hey! Being based on a Baku should make for a really interesting in-battle gimmick, where it can use Hypnosis to disable enemies, and Dream Eater to steal their health, right? Wrong!

While it’s based on a legendary dream-eating monster it doesn’t actually learn the move Dream Eater! The cherry on top of all this is the fact that this Pokemon is left as a push-over in battle by an unfocused set of stats.

Somewhere out there in the multiverse is a version of Hypno that is a scary, quadrupedal monster that can tank hits, put enemies to sleep and extend its longevity by sucking out their brain. Here, though, we get this goof that doesn’t know what it wants to be.

Steven Rondina hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
