Pokémon Sword & Shield: Ranking Every New Pokémon So Far
2. Grookey
The cat’s already out of the bag a little bit with Grookey, as its rhythmic drumming in the trailer combined with each translation of its name featuring something musical (groove monkey in English), we kind of know where it’s heading.
A little wink to legendary British band The Beatles has been muted, with some suggesting the drumming Grass type could turn into an O-Ringo-Tan for its final stage. Whether the idea to have a rock n roll inspired Pokémon as a Grass type is a tongue in cheek gag or a naive coincidence is anyone’s guess, too.
It doesn’t have any negative ‘I hope it’s not X type’ drama around it like Scorbunny, but its base type is enough to put the brakes on this cheeky monkey for some.
Grass types can be a reliable member of the team, but many trainers avoid the Grass type starters. Even in the first two generations, Bulbasaur was criticised for making early gyms easy, while Chikorita was criticised for making them too hard. They just can’t win.
Grass types can usually be caught before Fire or Water types, so it’s understandable, but it still seems a little harsh. Regardless, it’s enough to keep it off top spot.
