Pokémon Sword & Shield: 10 Gigantamax Secrets You TOTALLY Missed

2. Orbeetle

The origin of this bug and psychic type is one of the most complicated to explain, but it's also perhaps the coolest. The entire evolution chain is based the lifecycle of a ladybird from larvae until it becomes a red beetle with white spots.

However Orbeetle looks a little off.

Have you noticed the colour of its eyes? They're cyan, which is notably unnatural. Its body also looks nothing like the bug it's based on, with a black spindly frame that looks somewhat parasitic.

In real life, a green-eyed wasp, known scientifically as the Dinocampus Coccinellae, is a UK-based bug that alters the mind of ladybirds to look after it, then be consumed by its offspring.

It is considered a threat to agriculture as ladybirds are vital to the ecosystem because they eat lots of aphids. While ladybirds are common around the globe, this parasitic wasp operates mainly in the UK.

This really niche fact has definitely had an impact on Orbeetle's Gigantimax design, as it looks completely insane. It's no longer just smart, but has taken the form of a UFO or an alien, "paying tribute" to the Dinocampus Coccinellae that terrifies so many real-world ladybirds.
