PS2 Mini: 20 Games It MUST Include
3. TimeSplitters 2
Developed by Free Radical Design, 2002’s TimeSplitters 2 wasn’t exclusive to the PlayStation 2, but it was perhaps the second greatest FPS franchise of the generation, second only to the undeniable Halo series.
As the name would imply, TimeSplitters 2 is a first person shooter set across multiple distinct time periods. The main conceit is that the player’s arsenal is also period-accurate, so the prohibition-era Chicago level sees players wielding thompson sub machine guns, the wild west a dual set of six shooters, and the far future a set of laser rifles.
Gameplay in TimeSplitters 2 is super varied for an FPS. Certain sections will require all-out shoot-first-ask-questions-later blasting which culminate in an epic boss fight, while others require a much more subtle, cognitive approach. The gunplay is also satisfying as can be, but the title is also remembered for being pretty difficult, even on the normal setting.
Fans haven’t seen anything from the TimeSPlitters series since Future Perfect back in 2005, and it would be nice to see the franchise revived on the PlayStation 2 Classic. Now that THQ Nordic have the rights to the series, the long wait may finally be coming to a close.
