PS4 Pro: Everything We Know So Far

6. No 4K Blu-Ray Player?

For some odd reason, the PS4 Pro, a console marketed on its 4K support, won't be able to play 4K UHD discs.

Huh.

In a chat with The Guardian, Sony's own Andrew House addressed this bizarre issue, claiming that "while physical media continues to be a big part of the games business, we see a trend on video towards streaming. It's the second biggest use case for people's time on the system so we place more emphasis on that area."

This isn't a huge deal - not many people are buying 4K discs and those that are will have already invested in a player that supports the format - but it's shocking considering that the Xbox One S, a cheaper console, does support these discs. While Sony's choice to bank on a digital future is probably the right one, it's weird that a console focused on 4K and the future of visual fidelity doesn't support the highest-quality disc on the market.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for over ten years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. In 2022, he took charge of WhoCulture and has grown it into the biggest Doctor Who channel on YouTube, and one of the biggest Doctor Who communities on the web full-stop. He has been writing and video editing since his early teens, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers, off the back of a burning obsession with the Matt Smith era of the show. Like many his age, he first got into Doctor Who with the 2005 revival, but has since gone back and fallen in love with the classic years too. If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order, or to give you a random factoid about the making of Gridlock, Danny is the person to ask!
