PS5: 10 Most Promising Details You Haven’t Heard About

7. Backwards Is The New Forwards

Backwards compatibility has been something fans have being crying out for for years now, with Sony always being reluctant to get on board. Outside of emulated titles available on the store, the last backwards compatible console was the PS3, though that only played PS1 games.

So far, it's been a bit up in the air regarding the feature. PS5 technical lead Mark Cerny essentially confirmed "because it’s based in part on the PS4’s architecture, it will also be backward-compatible with games for that console" at announcement. Now, however, the team has come forward to say that they aren't sure "they can secure a complete compatibility".

Does this mean that only select, Sony-exclusive games will be backwards compatible, or only be available as downloads much like the current PS4 allows? Will it make our current library of titles redundant, or do we hold fire on going all-digital if there is hope?

It's not been confirmed either way yet, but here's hoping we can play all of our current favourites on a shiny new console.
