PS5: 10 Ways To Blow PS4 Out The Water
3. The Return Of Mascots
This is one a lot of people might disagree with, but the sales figures do back it up.
PlayStation has absolutely crushed it with exclusives this generation, with new IP Horizon: Zero Dawn excelling, as well as God Of War rebuilding itself as a more modern game. Those two are far from the only ones, but they make a fitting example. What the hell, toss Nathan Drake in there too.
Drake might be a hold over from the PS3 days, but he fits here as well.
None of these characters are system sellers. Their games? Definitely. But the characters on their own don’t mean much if you don’t know about their game. Back in the day though, Crash and Spyro carried the PlayStation on their back.
Yes, Crash & Spyro had a reputation built on their brilliant platforming games, but the characters themselves were just bursting with personality. The sales of N. Sane Trilogy, Reignited and Nitro Fueled show that there’s still very much a place for mascots in this industry.
They might be trading on nostalgia for now, but there’s every reason to think a fresh mascot game would do brilliantly too. Hopefully, Sony might even be brave enough to create a new character from scratch.
