PS5: 7 HUGE Mistakes Sony Are Making
7. Putting Former PS5 Exclusives On Last-Gen Hardware
One of the weirdest things to come out of the recent events, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Horizon: Forbidden West and Sackboy: A Big Adventure are all now forwards-compatible with the existing PS4 hardware.
Whilst a great move for PS4 owners, it came as a massive blow to those forking out the money to play dedicated next-gen games.
With Xbox doubling down on accessibility and feature parity across generations i.e. ensuring you can play whatever comes out on current hardware for the next few years, it brings about the question:
What do we actually need these new systems for?
Worse still, this change in release platforms stands in direct opposition to Sony's previous comments. Their own Jim Ryan made the case for "something new, something different, that can really only be enjoyed on PS5", adding that the team "believe in generations", and that they wouldn't be considering cross-gen releases.
Whether you actively want cross-gen output for the good of consumers is besides the point. Sony built a marketing strategy around "buying into" next gen, but now a meaningful part of that has been lost.
