PS5, Xbox Scarlett & Nintendo Switch: 9 Things We Need To See

2. PlayStation - Bridging The Gap With Other Platforms

Although PlayStation has commercially dominated this generation, recent apprehension towards co-operating with other companies has led Sony to look like a bit of a corporate stooge. Blocking players from transferring Fortnite accounts to or from the console as well as being publically shamed by Bethesda for outright refusing to allow crossplay for the upcoming Fallout 76, it's clear that the company's restrictive marketing strategies are starting to stain their gamer-friendly identity.

Beginning to bridge the gap and collaborating with other consoles would retain their repuation as a fan-focused company that serves the interests of the player above commercial practices. Whilst business-wise, Sony's strategy does make sense, the key to maintaining the support they've had this generation is to put the desires of the player before what amasses the most monetary gain, and if the monumental backlash says anything about what the fans want, it's that they are desperate to play with their friends regardless of what console they own.

Sony may want to keep the PlayStation as walled off as possible, but as we progress into the next-generation the console's going to struggle if it can't offer the kind of interconnectivity its competitors are so ambitiously pursuing. It may be time for the blue-brand to move past its lofty ego and embrace a more connected future.
