Rage 2: 10 Features That Prove It's Better Than DOOM
3. A Protagonist With Some Personality
In some ways, the appeal of DOOM Guy is his absence of personality. Without saying a word, you recognise him as a big ball of hate and rage that will kill every demon he sees. No vendettas or anything beyond that, he just wishes to kill. It's a characterization perfectly suited to a game like DOOM, but with a world as personality-driven as the one in Rage 2, you needed a protagonist with something to say that wasn't just grunts.
The game starts off strong by giving you the chance to pick a male or female protagonist. After that, your character ends up being like a Borderlands protagonist; personable characters surrounded by far more talkative NPCs. This puts those surrounding your character as the head police officer with you resembling a captive (and involved) passenger on a ride-along.
A stronger personality type like the ones in Sunset Overdrive or Saints Row could've allowed for more laughs and life throughout the campaign, but clearly, the world was meant to provide that for you. Nevertheless, a character with something to say every so often and a recognizable personality is certainly a step above the typical silent protagonist.
