Ranking Every 3D Super Mario Game From Worst To Best
1. Super Mario Odyssey
Hype can be a dangerous beast, but every now and then, it's 100% right. Super Mario Odyssey deserved every bit of hype that it received, if not more.
A good video game franchise will take what worked from their last outing and build upon it to create something even better. This is what made Super Mario Galaxy 2 better than it's predecessor, but Odyssey takes it to a whole new level.
Super Mario Odyssey manages to take the best elements of every game that came before it and expand upon them in all of the right ways. In building upon the template of Super Mario 64, Odyssey held onto the charm that made Sunshine so memorable, the creativity that made Galaxy so unique, and the genius level design that made Galaxy 2 probably the most fun game of all time.
Odyssey is the kind of game that indulges the player to play however they want to. If something seems possible, it's because it probably is. If something looks explorable, it almost definitely is. And Odyssey will always reward the player for messing around and trying out different ways of playing.
This game might be the single-most inventive piece of video gaming history, yet not a single idea feels like it's overstaying its welcome. Odyssey is constantly moving in a perfect repetition from one idea to the next, and never starts to become dull.
Nintendo's really gonna have trouble outdoing themselves this time.
