4. Battlefield 1
In the latter half of the 2010s, modern military shooters were sinking in popularity; tired of the same linear campaigns and homogenised online modes, FPS developers started to take things in a different direction. Clearly following in the footsteps of Call of Duty: World War Two, DICE chose to take Battlefield all the way back to the First World War and achieved massive success as a result.
Oddly titled it may be, but this older style entry in the franchise is the best release Battlefield has had in recent years. When compared to the likes of Verdun and other more niche shooters, Battlefield 1 is far from an accurate representation of the so-called Great War, but it remains a fine example of just how enjoyable its combined arms warfare can be online.
With its excellent array of modes, specialist classes and gargantuan maps, Battlefield 1 represents a massive step forward from previous entries.
Even the single-player was able to take some steps forward, offering a range of soldier perspectives through its "War Stories" mode. From the trenches of the western front all the way to the desert plains of Arabia, Battlefield 1 contained a surprisingly broad array of perspectives throughout the conflict. It's too bad DICE couldn't maintain this momentum after post-release content wrapped
