Ranking Every Battlefield From Worst To Best
3. Battlefield 1942
As the game that started it all, Battlefield 1942 is an important part of online gaming history. It was released in 2002 and originally started off as a planned GameCube exclusive. Eventually, the game was retooled for the PC by a team of just fourteen developers; DICE has certainly come a long way since
The key to the game's success was its focus on team-based play; many shooters from the nineties through to the early 2000s were arena-focused, often fostering communities that revolved around individual play in deathmatch landscapes. Battlefield 1942 was one of the first games to change that; taking out the enemy was important, but so too was wider map control, capturing objectives and making use of the many vehicles.
The franchise's debut successfully brought the combined arms warfare sub-genre to the mainstream. It went on to gain a massive following, inspiring other imitators like Star Wars: Battlefront and Planetside over the next few years. On top of that, Battlefield 1942 was the game that powered DICE into the upper echelon of the industry.
After several years making basic racing games and the occasional licensed product, the Swedish developer finally had their premier franchise that they've been heavily commited towards ever since.
