Ranking Every Battlefield From Worst To Best
2. Battlefield 2
Three years after the series debuted, DICE set about upping the ante for the 2005 follow-up. Beating its competitor to the modern setting two years early, Battlefield 2 set a high bar for online FPS battles at the time. It was a highly refined sequel that massively expanded on the original game's potential.
Battlefield 1942 put the franchise and its developer on the map, but 2 showed just how thrilling an entertaining the online FPS genre could be. When you had a full lobby of 64 players tearing up the game's many maps, it was one of the best multiplayer experiences you could have at the time. Like any great sequel, DICE knew to expand the scope of the action. With seven viable classes alongside the new commander option, the ways to play increased exponentially.
The latter in particular was a great addition that put one player in charge of assets like missile strikes and supply drops outside of the on-foot gameplay. The franchise's community grew rapidly after the game's 2005 release as Battlefield 2 scooped several awards and added more content with the Special Forces and Armoured Fury booster packs.
