After making a few well received action games in the late 1990s, Bioware shifted gears to tackle a genre closer to their hearts: tabletop role-playing games.

Moving away from accessible, mass-market experiences, with Baldur's Gate the developers were finally allowed to geek out and revel in the intricacies of imaginative fantasy worlds.

Wanting to bring the same immersive Dungeons and Dragons experience over to the video game space, Bioware adapted all of the signature features of the iconic tabletop game, integrating them in a way that didn't break the immersion of the world they were building while still staying true to the features fans adored.

Adopting an isometric design that worked so well for the Fallout series, Baldur's Gate facilitated amazing player-driven stories that were tailored to their own individual choices. It set the bar for RPGs going forward, and established Bioware as a developer to be reckoned with.
