Ranking Every Call Of Duty Campaign From Worst To Best
5. Black Ops III
After the second Black Ops game adopted a more straight-forward CoD narrative, developers at Treyarch attempted to return to the psychological elements of its original title with their latest release.
But while players agree that the actual levels themselves were as solid as ever, it's this winding plot that proved to be divisive in Black Ops III. Beginning with your character being brutally dismembered Robocop style, you spend the rest of the game hunting down the people responsible for your mutilation after being given a new synthetic body.
However the final missions reveal that the game's introductory sequence was actually its last chronologically, and the rest of the story actually took place in the mind of the player reliving the memories and merging with the body of one of the characters in the narrative.
It doesn't make much more sense when you see it play out for yourself, but it should be commended that a Call of Duty plot could actually inspire debate about its ending and aim for something more ambitious than merely killing the bad guy in a lame quick-time event.
