After the euphoric, "Best.Character.EVER" delights of DMC 1 and the hype-resetting blandness of DMC 2, Capcom threw everything at the wall and came out with the "... why didn't they think of this sooner?!" DMC 3.

In two words it all made so much sense. The cocksure attitude, the acrobatic combat - the ludicrous fashion sense that only a demon high on their own supply could pull off. A younger Dante trying to open his monster-hunting business whilst tussling with brother Vergil was beyond incredible. And then you played it.

Holding up brilliantly today, DMC 3 introduced the "Style" system - the ability to specialise in more advanced sword moves, evasive dodges, multi-target firearm blasts or defensive counters. You had to pick one before each mission, but this just meant you didn't have to worry about juggling a larger array of attacks, and could get to carving everything into chunks far more seamlessly.

You could ride enemies across the floor while firing both pistols, backflip off walls and rain down fire in a tornado spin from above. See a poll nearby? Dante will spin around it mid-combo, decimating that group of enemies who almost had you pinned down.

A sublime mix of character and game, DMC 3 would still be the reigning champion, if not for...
