Ranking Every Final Fantasy Composer

17. Akifumi Tada & Shiro Hamaguchi

Works: Unlimited

Despite the very limited recognition of Legend Of The Crystals, Square-Enix ventured once more into anime with Final Fantasy Unlimited. Originally planned as a series of 52 episodes, this was slashed to 25 and the story left unfinished as a result.

Slightly more care was given to the soundtrack than to cohesively wrapping up the narrative. Two collections of tracks were released, which would’ve presumably increased in tandem with the remaining episodes as they aired. A collaboration between Akifumi Tada and Shiro Hamaguchi (with a few tracks, including the great ‘Hearts That Touch’ and ‘Recollections Of Lisa’, accredited to Nobuo Uematsu), it is one of the quirkier soundtracks in the series.

Many of the tracks are brash (‘Trampled By The Monster’) or over-the-top cheery (‘Vivid’), but with the likes of ‘Death’ and ‘A Little Courage’, a diverse range is covered by the pair, who are both experienced outside of the world of Final Fantasy.

Yamaguchi has had a continued association with the series, orchestrating tracks from VII through X and producing three of the Piano Collections albums that have accompanied a number of series releases. Composing duties seemed to be a one off though.
