The birth of survival horror as we know started here, with nothing more than a handful of S.T.A.R.S. operatives and a bunch of zombies in the dreaded Spencer mansion. Ask anyone what is the scariest moment in Resident Evil and you'll be guaranteed to hear about that time the god damn dog jumped through that window. With fixed camera angles and tank controls, this game raised the bar for horror in video games as any room could contain terrifying creatures, but the player wouldn't have a clue where they might be without pushing forward.
Contrary to belief, the controls can actually be mastered in no time, and especially on the Playstation 1 back in the '90s, they were the best direction to go in. It wasn't just zombies that were a threat either, because pick a fear and Resident Evil 1 will have you covered.
Giant spider, giant sharks and ever a giant snake were between Jill Valentine or Chris Redfield as they discover what is really going on under the mansion.
The cherry on top has to be the voice acting - some so bad it loops around to being hilarious and was even awarded a Guinness World Record. Even though there is now the Remake, this is must for anyone seeking to get their fill of Resident Evil, or if they need to know the origin of the "Jill sandwich".
