Crash 1? Slightly primitive platforming. Crash 2? Trial and error mentalities underpinning some otherwise brilliant levels. Crash 3? Stellar presentation and an attitude that let the whole world enjoy the fun - at the expense of those wanting a challenge.
Crash Team Racing though? Just about the most pitch-perfect game Naughty Dog have coded on a purely mechanical level.
The feel of the karts has just the right amount of weight, with courses being perfect blends of tight corners, home straights, pepperings of power-ups and boost-pads to nail. Once you get the whole thing down, races elevate into furious blends of rockets, boost-chains and last minute overtakings to secure victory.
For single players, the courses and story mode were a total joy to take in - but as a local multiplayer experience, well, it would take Mario Kart until 2014 to implement the sort of speed CTR was flaunting in 1999.
