Formerly Lost Boys Games, this Dutch studio reformed as Guerilla in 2003 and released a duo of FPS shooters. First, Shellshock: Nam ’67, a rough-edged Vietnam shooter, and then Killzone, a PS2 exclusive attempt at rivaling Microsoft's Halo series.

Even though Killzone was a critical disappointment, it sold well, and Sony purchased them in 2005 with an eye to build and improve the franchise. What emerged were several technically impressive if fairly superficial games that never came close to being the 'Halo Killer' of the initial hype.

Luckily in 2017, Guerilla tried something completely different with Horizon Zero Dawn. A quality recipe - lush open-world design, layered challenging combat, and strong protagonist and story - concocted into a peak PS4 title, and shot Guerilla's pole position up on these types of lists.

Their rejuvenated presence is in the early days, so it sits lower than some of their Sony siblings. With that said, the recently revealed Horizon sequel looks like a quality evolution of the franchise and a sure-fire PS5 system seller.
