Ranking Every PS5 Game From Worst To Best (So Far)
4. Returnal
Again, props to Sony frontloading their system's rollout with more hardcore titles like Demon's Souls and Returnal.
The latter here is Housemarque's first foray into making a 3D roguelike, but they weren't about to sacrifice any of their patented bullet hell aesthetic. Thankfully, the PS5 can keep characters and enemies moving while showering projectiles and energy blasts all around.
In the story you're playing as the crash-landed astronaut Selene, someone who after finding their own body outside the ship, embarks on a surreal mindf*ck of a story, tying together her experiences at the academy with a troubled childhood past and VERY messy present.
It's the gameplay that makes Returnal sing though. At every turn you're getting stronger, either on a given run thanks to damage modifiers or weapon upgrades, or across multiple lives, slowly altering the pool of what's available so you eventually make it through.
Returnal is tough, make no bones about it. It's also one of the most impressive, well-oiled machines of a video game you can ever play, and conquering its challenges over time feels like nothing else.
