Ranking Every Rockstar Game From Worst To Best
23. Grand Theft Auto
Hats off to the original GTA - we all remember playing it at one point or another. The awkward top-down view that always got in the way of a blisteringly fast chase, the 'BSTARD' unlock-all cheat code and the feeling deep-down that you were playing something just that little bit too naughty.
Originally born from a glitch in a far more family-friendly title called Race n' Chase, the then-named DMA Design (now Rockstar North) realised that when the police A.I. freaked out and rammed the player, they could fashion an entire game around evading the law and committing all sorts of crimes.
A lightbulb "IDEA!" moment, if ever there was one.
Enter Grand Theft Auto, a game that holds up in every respect as a "Where it all began" archive piece. For 90s gamers grasping the controller with underage hands this was as 'adult' as it got, and though GTA III is the one that really made the world take notice, the franchise had to get its start somewhere.
