18. Grand Theft Auto London 1969 & 1961
Though the first two GTAs certainly had an identity of pure rebellion and being the social outcast, these mission pack releases provided the last quintessential ingredient in making Grand Theft Auto a cultural behemoth: The embodiment of a specific time period.
From just the nuance and charm of tearing around Westminster in a black cab to hearing the appropriately Guy Ritchie-esque score twanging away in the background, GTA London is almost the "true fan's old school GTA".
Coming at a point in between GTA 1 and 2, it once again showed Rockstar growing into the recognisable tastemakers they're regarded as today. GTA's London expansions certainly relied on the original game to exist (you literally needed the disc to 'activate' this new content) but focusing on that almost misses the point: The best GTAs are era-appropriate, and this provided a first look into that way of thinking.
