inXile, Obsidian, and Bethesda. If only Xbox could save Bioware from EA...then they would hold the whole gambit on premier western RPG studios. Regardless, at least they own the BIGGEST.
While Bethesda was respected in the PC circles during the 80s and 90s, once ZeniMax Media split the publishing division into Bethesda Softworks and the game section into Bethesda Game Studios...the company went stratospheric.
They made a dent first with Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, yet it was the combination of Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and Fallout 3 that took that put them on the top spot, and pretty much defined the formula for the modern open-world RPG.
Things arguably hit an ultimate peak with Skyrim...although stumbled slightly with Fallout 76.
Regardless of this recent skid mark, you can't argue with their legacy, talent, and promising future, with brand-new franchise Starfield in development, and a fresh Elder Scrolls on the way - and both likely coming straight to Xbox Game Pass.
In summary, Bethesda, the biggest RPG game developer - let alone one of the biggest studios making games at present - is now owned by Xbox...of course, they're going to sit at number one.
