Ranking October 2016's Video Games From Worst To Best
2. Gears Of War 4
First Star Wars: The Force Awakens and then Creed, now Gears of War 4. 'Passing the torch movies' are the in thing at the moment, as tons of creative minds find ways to breathe new life into a given franchise without royally peeing off fans of the original *cough* Ghostbusters *cough*.
Enter Microsoft's revamped Gears sequel, and whilst new character JD isn't a patch on the iconic and loveable Marcus Fenix, he does come with a handful of new moves to deploy in combat. More in the "If it ain't broke..." mould, Gears' iconic combat got to such a status by incrementally building on what went before.
To that end, "new stuff" amounts to being able to pull enemies over cover, finish them off with instant-kills and use a bevy of new weapons. That's about it, but with such a solid base, it does allow new developers The Coalition to craft a solid story that melds the old school with the new.
As their tongue is firmly in-cheek, Gears manages to be a solid nod to the original trilogy, whilst carrying things forward in a confident and interesting manner.
Oh, and that final plot-twist? Damn.
