3. Metroid: Samus Returns

Another classic Nintendo property finally getting a new instalment in its most classic of moulds. Metroid's latest adventure on 3DS claims to be a remake of 1991's Metroid: Return of Samus, but with completely new environments, melee attacks, better movement and a wider array of gadgets, it might as well be a completely new adventure.

In absolutely every respect, this might just be the best Metroid there has ever been. Yes, Super first perfected the series' item-based progression and Metroid Fusion sped everything up tenfold, but Samus Returns walks that line between challenge and exploration perfectly.

Thanks to small inclusions like an Other M-like counter ability and a map ping, if you're lost for even a second you can tap to request a small directional hint as to where you should be headed, or which chunks of the world can be blown away.

Together it makes this so damn playable, with such a perfect control scheme and such a great, iconic look. Metroid as a franchise has taken some bumps over the years, but this is vintage side-scrolling sequel with just the right amount of innovation and modernisation to make it accessible to newcomers and fans alike.

Perfect.
