5. Survival-Horror
CapcomResident Evil 4 may well be one of the most beloved entries in the series but the 2005 game marked a departure from the series staunchly survival-horror roots. The celebrated game not only had far more developed shooting mechanics but was jam-packed with high-octane quick time events and a plentiful supply of weapons and ammunition. RE5 and RE6 each became progressively more action orientated, with both games being criticised for their deviation from the ethos of the long-running survival-horror series. Resident Evil: Revelations was the first game in recent memory where Capcom endeavoured to return to their roots. The game boasted exceptional graphics, a brooding atmosphere and an emphasis to survive in an isolated location rather than racking up as many kills as possible worldwide. As a result Resident Evil: Revelations experienced far more critical success first on the 3DS and later on the PS3, 360 and Wii U than RE6. It is expected that the forthcoming Resident Evil title will build on the survival-horror renaissance started in Revelations. RE6 proved that Capcoms series was never supposed to be an action game. In the next title we can expect to see a far more detailed, single location, a scarcer supply of bullets and a more brooding atmosphere.
