Resident Evil 7: Biohazard - The Baker Family Explained

Marguerite Baker

Speaking of Marguerite, she has the 'honour' of saying her infected self in the game is probably the closest to what she had been like prior to the events of the game. The matriarch of the Baker family, it's Marguerite's innate maternal instinct to offer up her house and look after Eveline and Mia Winters following their discovery that ultimately leads to her and her family's demise.

Marguerite is also the first of the infected Bakers to really notice herself changing, logging the changes she begins feeling in a journal and even venturing into town and consulting with the local doctor.

But even as her physical being mutated into the putrid state found in-game, she remained dedicated to her family and continued to insist on filling out the same sort of responsibilities she had before. She helps to infect the people the Baker family had kidnapped by preparing meals made from mostly human remains, strongly insisting that the whole group still sit at the table, eat all of her hard work up and practice good etiquette throughout.

Guarding the D-Series arm that proved to be the vital part of a serum that could cure an individual infected by Eveline, Marguerite spent most of her time patrolling the old house on the outskirts of the Baker estate. She had evolved in such a way that an army of insects followed her and her lantern wherever she went, eventually sprouting a sac-like hive that reproduces hordes of mutated insects. In a way, this is a reflection of personality as a mother, keeping her precious 'babies' nourished, looked after and close to her at all times.

Adding to the tragedy of the Baker family, when Marguerite is eventually killed by Ethan in Biohazard, Jack can be heard crying out in anguish. It's fitting that the disgusting sac on her body is the weak spot that Ethan targets, with it being the place where she houses her 'babies'. Another example of Marguerite's maternal instincts getting the better of her.
