Resident Evil 7: Biohazard - The Baker Family Explained

Joe Baker

The playable character and hero of the End of Zoe DLC, Joe Baker is the cool uncle everyone would love to have. The older brother of Jack, Joe is a lot like the Baker family patriarch in many regards, at least during his pre-infection days. Having both grown up on the grounds in the Louisiana swamps, Joe supposedly acted like many a big brother out there, bloodying Jack's nose and clotheslining him into the swamp for example before they both went out and spent time in the military.

A bullish sort of individual, Joe is never directly referenced in the main game by any of the Bakers and spends his time living the life of a loner. Thanks to his isolated living conditions and background in the military, Joe possesses both impressive survival and combat skills; he's also a proud black-and-white sort of man like his brother, learning to fight the Molded that have begun springing up around him rather than reach out to the military and ask for help.

The only character in the game able to defeat the Molded and Jack Baker with nothing but his own bare fists and a couple of badass finisher moves, his survivalism and brutality makes him one of the most impressive, if slightly unnerving, heroes the series has thrown up. Unlike with someone like Ethan or Chris Redfield, Joe never seems like the kind of person to be restrained by anything other than what seems right in his mind at the time; steadfast and tunnel-visioned, it's easy to imagine a scenario in which Joe Baker makes a situation ten times worse rather than better.

At the end of the End of Zoe DLC, Joe managed to use the power of the AMG-78 power gauntlet he had recovered to put Jack down for good and rescue Zoe. The DLC closes with Blue Umbrella curing Zoe of Eveline's infection and Joe meeting Chris Redfield, with the final two members of the Baker family finally free to continue their lives in peace.
