9. A Different Decade Of Horror Movie Inspiration

Resident Evil 8
Capcom

While Resident Evil 7 was set in the present day, the game could have easily taken place in the '70s. Taking inspiration from horror films of the decade such as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Evil Dead, developers at Capcom took the aesthetics of these movies to create a contemporary game that had a throwback grindhouse look.

The overt '70s horror inspiration made the latest release in the long-running franchise feel unique and distinct, but in the future the developers should drop the grindhouse vibe and start cribbing material from other classic eras of horror.

They've already shown a fondness for the 2000s with the Saw-like levels found towards the end of Resi 7, but there's nothing stopping the developer from going back through the entire history of horror for the next game.

The timeline of the franchise that was established in 7 means that the next game will probably stay in the modern day, but that doesn't mean it has to have the look or feel of a modern day game.
