After the turmoil that was Resident Evil 6, the series needed to make some changes. Resident Evil 7 returned to its horror roots, shifted to a first-person perspective, and introduced new character Ethan Winters into the mix.

Ethan was the everyman archetype. He was simply an ordinary guy who found themselves in a terrifying situation. Players were experiencing the nightmare of the Baker home alongside him, which consequently added a lot of tenson to the game. However, his lack of personality didn't exactly make him as engaging a character as his predecessors.

By the time Village arrived Ethan was expanded into a more fleshed-out character complete with quippy one-liners of his own and intimate narrative arc. The result was a more interesting character who went on what would become a surprisingly emotional journey.

Whether or not he appears in the series again, Ethan Winters has undoubtedly left a huge impression on the future of Resident Evil.
