Resident Evil Village: 5 Best Parts (And 5 That Sucked)
2. BEST: Presentation & Gameplay
Capcom continue to prove that their RE Engine is one of the best graphics engines in the industry today and their photogrammetry process is essentially perfected at this point. The village itself looks gorgeous and like it was truly heavily populated at some point. If we compare to Resident Evil 4, which admittedly is a seventeen year old game at this point, this Village feels much more “lived in” that the one in Spain.
There is a story in the Village and there are visual signs everywhere that people experienced a struggle there against the Lycans. Trashed kitchens, torn up cushions, smashed windows. It is wonderfully atmospheric and the layer of snow that covers everything adds a cold and foreboding atmosphere that feels new in the franchise.
The gameplay here is fantastic. The controls feel intuitive and easy to pick up. Ethan feels smooth and agile. This gives you the feeling of being in control of the character whilst also being just limited enough in your movement to still feel tension whilst playing.
This feels very much like a perfection of the control scheme first presented in Resident Evil VII and like a solid control scheme for the franchise to use going forwards.
