Sega Mega Drive Mini: Ranking The 10 Best Games
5. Phantasy Star 4
Fantastic JRPG and the peak of a fantastic series which started back on the Master System, and later revisited on the Dreamcast, although with a new storyline.
As with all classic JRPGs, the story starts simply, but the plot soon thickens, with great villains giving way to even darker forces, and your travels across the planet expanding across the galaxy. The story is mainly driven by dialogue between the various characters in the world, although there are some nicely animated cartoon style strips at key parts of the story.
Controlling an eclectic mix of 5 characters in battle leads to some strategic fights, and there’s an impressive array of techniques to use. The technique system is further developed by combination attacks. Selecting a certain set of moved for a round can lead to your characters pulling off combination attacks.
There are times when the game can get a bit tricky, and some grinding is required, but nothing you wouldn’t expect in a JRPG from this era, and you’ll want to push on through the 20 – 25 hour game to see the conclusion of an epic story.
