Should More Classic Final Fantasy Games Be Remade? The Arguments For & Against
1. For - A Passionate Fanbase
There is a reason why some of the earlier Final Fantasies have been remastered and re-released on almost ten different platforms over the last twenty years (IV holds the record, including a full remake for the Nintendo DS that wasn’t just an upscaled port). From PCs to phones, fans just cannot get enough of their favourite stories and are keen to re-experience them (and any additional content that Square-Enix throw in as an incentive) time after time. This is no different to how people are inclined to rewatch their favourite films on a regular basis, or start watching Friends from season 1 episode 1 once again after running through the series of Netflix for the nineteenth time.
If Square-Enix do ultimately choose to remake any of their other classics after they eventually finish with VII down the line, they can be assured of a high volume of almost guaranteed sales given how widespread and passionate the fanbase that they have harvested over the last thirty-three years is. The successes of XIV and XV have also ensured that the franchise bears a recognisable and bankable name once again after a rocky few years that saw the release of only the XIII sequels and the disastrous Before Meteor version of their now flourishing MMO.
Whether it’s a universally beloved classic like VI or an underrated gem like Tactics, anything made to the standard of the VII Remake thus far will be greatly appreciated by legions of gamers around the world.
