Spider-Man PS4: 10 Problems The Sequel MUST Fix
9. Unlockable Map Sections
One of the dullest features in recent gaming history rears its ugly head once again. For as long as there has been open world gaming, there has been gradually unlockable maps. It's one of the top complaints on players lists for a while and doesn't seem to be going away any time soon.
Unless the storyline requires certain sections to be inaccessible, this feature has never made any sense. It seems to exist purely to fill an extra achievement slot and little else. Sure, developers have spent days working on the game and naturally they want the player to experience every single bit. Yet more often than not, developers make an open world so big that they can't possibly fill it all. Players often find themselves wasting a lot of time exploring bland expanses and gain very little from it.
Spider-Man PS4 has another reason why the unlockable map mechanic doesn't work. Of course, it offers extra icons on the map for mission locations, but it's not unlocking anything we haven't seen before. Being a Spidey game, it's naturally set in New York City and let's face it, it's not as if no one knows what that looks like already.
