Spider-Man PS4: 10 Problems The Sequel MUST Fix
3. Quick Time Events
Quick time events have become incredibly over used over the last decade and it's rarely a welcome addition. Popularised by games like Shenmue back in 1999, the QTE has evolved into a staple of action games in particular. Usually deployed in cutscenes, it's a way for the player to engage with the cinematic storytelling and can improve the experience when done right.
Sadly, the mechanic rarely has the desired effect. Heavy Rain drew heavy criticism for its reliance on QTE, particularly the infamous "JASON" sequence. The extra button pressing and controller shaking added very little to the experience and fans grew tired quickly.
This is basically the same for Spider-Man PS4. Players often find themselves stuck in a loop when missing a button press during the particularly long cutscenes.
In recent years, games including Marvel's Spider-Man have included the option to turn off quick time events in the accessibility settings. Playing the game with the feature disabled actually improves the cinematic nature of Insomniac's game, offering the player the chance to enjoy the developer's excellent animation work instead of frantic button pressing.
