Spider-Man PS4: 5 Things It Did Better Than The Arkham Series (And 5 Things It Did Worse)
7. Stealth
Spider-Man tries its best when it comes to stealthy gameplay, but the Arkham Series is the king of stealth.
Fundamentally Batman is a character based on fear and hiding in the shadows, which is, therefore, a key aspect of his video games. Whereas Spider-Man is your “friendly neighbourhood” crime fighter, a considerably less scary character. From the very start, Batman has an advantage.
The Arkham Series is famous for their Predator missions. Sectioned off parts of the map with high vantage points, underfloor grates, breakable walls, and plenty of shadows to use to take out the bad guys. The gameplay is a perfect piece of the formula that would leave you feeling like something majorly important was missing, if not included in the games. Arkham Knight also went on to introduce Fear takedowns, which allowed you to wipe out a whole room of enemies in one swift motion. Just like Batman would.
Spider-Man takes a similar approach to its stealth gameplay. A big difference is most of its stealth missions are split into waves. This makes for an interesting approach when strategising how to handle your gadgets and the interactive environment. Transitioning from stealth to combat gameplay is seamless, just like the Arkham Series, and results in a great sense of achievement when an area is cleared.
Spider-Man does nothing wrong with its stealth gameplay per se, but for the Arkham Series, it is its bread and butter.
