2. Peace Keepers
Peace Keepers has a great selection of levels, a well designed hub world and memorable boss battle. It missed out on top spot by a whisker.
Skelos Badlands, Scorch and Shady Oasis from Ripto’s Rage would all fit right at home in Peace Keepers. They would face stiff competition from Dry Canyon and Cliff Town though. Both of those lean heavily on the desert theme to great effect, building mini mazes for Spyro to weave through, despite the lack of heavy scenery seen in other worlds. Ice Cavern is enjoyable too, but feels a little wedged in.
It’s slightly harder to pin down the theme of the dragons in Peace Keepers, but at least they don’t suffer from the overdesign that bogs down those in the likes of Beast Makers. In Doctor Shemp, the realm boasts a boss whose difficulty is perfectly pitched for where he features, has an entertaining build up and gets perhaps the biggest personality save for Gnasty Gnorc in the whole game.
Plus the gnorcs will moon you if you miss them. Brilliant.
