Star Wars: 10 Best Starfighter Games You Need To Play
7. Star Wars: Rogue Squadron
1998's Rogue Squadron for the Nintendo 64 (also for PC) is a landmark game. It's the first arcade-style Star Wars starfighter game, it's the first game to take advantage of the N64's memory Expansion Pak, and it's the first in a series of excellent title that would follow it.
You play as Luke Skywalker, Rogue Leader, piloting five different Rebel craft against the Empire's best. High scores translate to medals; more and better medals help unlock hidden content, which includes several bonus levels and better ships. In a unique twist, it also gave a preview of content that hadn't been released in canon yet - one of the hidden ships was the Naboo Starfighter, which wouldn't make an appearance 'for real' until Phantom Menace was released six months after the game was.
Rogue Squadron reinforced the viability of Star Wars on consoles, is one of the best-selling N64 games, and shows what a great licence coupled with great technology can do. The graphics and sound are fantastic, the flight mechanics are realistic, and the numerous secrets and powerups make the game a blast to play.
Oh, it also let you fly a 1969 Buick Electra that belonged to the game's sound designer. Harry Potter's flying Ford Anglia be damned!
