Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order Review - 5 Ups & 3 Downs

1. It's The Game Star Wars Fans Have Waited A Decade For

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order Second Sister
EA

When EA and Lucasfilm look back on the last generation of Star Wars games, it's likely both parties will draw negative conclusions. EA did resurrect the cult-favourite Battlefront IP and DICE weathered controversy with both releases to deliver two genuinely great titles, but there's no ignoring LucasArts' legacy or how the most beloved Star Wars games were single-player offerings.

To that end, the high-profile cancellations of Project Ragtag and Project Orca - two separate single-player Star Wars games - have led many to believe that EA doesn't see value in a single-player Star Wars game. Development on Fallen Order commenced before the publisher acquired Respawn outright, while the way the title was marketed before launch also ran into criticism when it became clear demos weren't showing the game's true focus.

But, for all the controversy, waiting and just general 'whateverness' when it comes to EA's Star Wars, make no mistake - this is absolutely the game Star Wars have been waiting for. Overdue in many respects but arriving at just the right time (a whole month before the Skywalker Saga draws to a close) Fallen Order reiterates the value of Star Wars single-player titles, and ranks alongside the very best licensed games ever released.

It isn't without its problems - and the lack of polish can derail it at times - but in whisking players away to a galaxy far, far away, Fallen Order succeeds and then some.

Final Rating - ★★★1/2

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
