The Last of Us fans have been eagerly anticipating the multiplayer component of Part II for quite some time, after Naughty Dog confirmed it wouldn't ship with the base single player game back in 2019.

Though we sadly didn't get to see even a sliver of gameplay at Summer Games Fest, Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann did announce that the multiplayer mode's scope had expanded enough that it was now a standalone game.

Basically, you'll need to pay more money if you want to experience it.

It's easy to be cynical about this announcement, but Druckmann promised that it was "in some ways bigger" than The Last of Us Part II's single player, while showing off a piece of concept art which depicted chaos spilling across a large urban environment.

Druckmann also confirmed that the game would have a full-on story, a bevy of new characters, and take place in "another part of the United States."

Hopefully Naughty Dog might be ready to finally drop some gameplay at the Game Awards in December. Fingers crossed.
