1. It's Actually Hilarious (Without Trying Too Hard)
Of course, all of this is helped by the fact that Sunset Overdrive is actually a really funny game. Launching a record from an automatic weapon so that it bounces off one mutant's face and into another is a funny sight in itself, and so is launching dynamite-stuffed teddies into a crowd of gangsters. Sunset City is one massive playground and there's a lot of amusement to be found as a result. Your character is a witty so-and-so who is constantly firing off lines about the people he meets too, be it the phone-obsessed Oxfords (who communicate exclusively through text pop-ups) or the Live Action Role Players who are completely oblivious to the real-world. It's a satirical game (lampooning much of modern society and culture) which many will warm to immediately and even the constant fourth-wall breaking is entertaining here. On top of that, various elements of the gameplay are played off for amusement. There's a variety of respawn animations which are sure to draw a chuckle (the Portal-influenced one is a particular favourite) and the game is rife with innuendo, though importantly never in too strong a frat-boyish manner. Admittedly, certain characters and events might have you rolling your eyes but then something else will have you laughing within a matter of moments. The gameplay, cut-scenes and dialogue are fast-paced and full of entertainment, ensuring that there's never a dull moment. Agree? Disagree? I have an addiction to achievements, a craving for new bands and a dream to become Captain America. I once finished second in a Mario Kart 7 tournament so I'm kind of a big deal.
