Sunset Overdrive: 10 Things It Does Better Than Anyone Else
5. Ludicrously Fun Movement
Sunset Overdrive could have been a standard third-person shooter with normal on-ground movement but then, it wouldn't be the exceptional title it is now. The game's major selling point is the way it makes movement crucial to gameplay; travelling on foot is fine and dandy, but in the Awesomepocalypse everything needs to be that extra bit more fun. Overdrive makes grinding, wall-running and bouncing off of objects key features in the game and it stands out impressively as a result. It feels very similar to the Tony Hawk's games of old; in here you'll always be looking for ways to extend your combos, thinking one step ahead when chaining grinds and bounces together. Interestingly, landing on the ground is actually a big no-no as it slows you down and ruins your combos, preventing you from using your Overcharge abilities. There's a mode in Chaos Squad called The Floor Is Lava (the floor literally becomes a sea of lava) and the whole game is designed to be played in a similar fashion. Sunset City is crafted and shaped so that the player can move both freely and quickly on rails, with the combo system so integral to success in combat that you'll need to constantly be thinking of ways to stay off the ground. It's an amazingly unique experience and it definitely gives the increasingly overcrowded third-person shooter genre something to think about.
I have an addiction to achievements, a craving for new bands and a dream to become Captain America. I once finished second in a Mario Kart 7 tournament so I'm kind of a big deal.
