Super Mario: Every Game Ranked From Worst To Best

16. Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins

Mario Feat Copy
Nintendo

Mario's second cut-sized caper retained all the trademark weirdness of its predecessor, but cloaked it in far more familiar dungarees. Whereas Mario Land was a stripped-down small-screen retooling, 6 Golden Coins was basically a lesser monochromatic mish-mash of something between Mario 3 and Mario World. And no bad thing.

A battery-powered Game Boy game means Super Mario Land 2 is a necessarily brisk affair, but it's acceptable when those double-As are working overtime to power an invention machine.

Another company might have hashed a port of the SNES classic, but not Nintendo; it's bursting with fresh ideas, original themes, and a whole new antagonist all to itself. Something about an upside-down 'M'?

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
