Speaking of Wario, the poor guy spends years quietly starring in one of Nintendo's most underrated series to an exclusively handheld audience, and when a console version finally emerges, he's nowhere to be seen.

With coin-collecting the name of the game, New Super Mario Bros. 2's avaricious objective makes it ripe for everyone's favourite microgame maestro, but in a bout of blatant stunt-casting, his less-malevolent counterpart is tediously drafted in his place. Talk about a missed opportunity.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 certainly isn't bad, but like most of the entries in the spin-off series, there's a sense of irony to the title. The growing familiarity coupled with its almost total lack of challenge mean it's not worth scraping the back of sofa in search of lost coins for this one.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
