Super Mario Maker 2 Review: 6 Ups & 3 Downs

3. Co-op Making Doesn’t Live Up To The Hype
The Nintendo Direct which contained the announcement that a Super Mario Maker 2 was coming - and coming this year - dropped with an overwhelming flood of information. New Items, Enemies and Gizmos were on the way, as well as new world themes and even a Super Mario 3D World game style - which shakes up play quite a bit.
But of all the new features, co-op making and play seemed like it could change the game in the most drastic way.
Sadly, this isn’t the case, with co-op building offering nothing more than an extra feather in the new game's cap. Having two players building at once gets confusing really easily - which happens more often than not.
The screen real estate just isn’t enough for building (especially on an undocked Switch) with a friend or even a child. It's not ideal, given this should be the younger generation's gateway into classic Mario play.
Where the chaos of multiple players on screen seemed to only add to the experience of New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, here it detracts from the overall enjoyment.
